Kipo
Kipo is traditional cake
from kotegede, one of heritage areas in Yogyakarta province. Kipo is a green
small and round cake, put on banana leave. kipo has
sweet taste typical Javanese brown sugar.
There are two history
versions about kipo . first version ,its stated in heritage monument namely serat centhini (centhini bible), there was a
cake named “kupo” which then called as kipo .
while , the second version told
that kipo word come from “iki apa” in
Javanese language means “what is this”. Long time ago, Mrs. djito, the kipo
maker always asked by people who bought that cake since it didn’t have any
name. after while it appeared “kipo” term and the cake
called kipo . kipo began to be known since 1946. In 1987, Mrs.djito followed
traditional food exhibition, since that time kipo was started to be known by
public. After Mrs.djito passed away in 1993, then her daughter, named Estri
continue her activity on making kipo.
Kipo made from sticky rice
flour which coloured green by pandan leave. Its contains ”enten-enten” , grated coconuts mixed with
Javanese brown sugar dough. After put stuffing from grated coconuts inside sticky
rice dough, folded and put on pan from clay which grilled with charcoal stove .kipo Flavors
come from cocunut, brown sugar and banana leaves is always special.
It is easy to find kipo
especially in kotagede traditional market or in Mrs.djito cake shop near the
market . Usually kotagede people eat
kipo with hot tea in the morning or
afternoon.
